This win, the SHP team hope, is the first of many following four nominations this year alone in the business, tourism and hospitality sectors. The spotlight has been put firmly on the country venue set in 44-acres of parkland, after a £2m investment helped convert the popular student accommodation site into a top hospitality and wedding venue.
Storthes Hall Park has already been nominated for Business Events Venue of the Year and New Tourism Business awards, as well as a prestigious White Rose Award, due to be announced later this autumn.
Storthes Hall Park Business Development Manager Miriam Pedersen-Smith said: “We are delighted to gain this recognition for the team who have worked incredibly hard throughout the year to turn Storthes Hall Park into a real destination venue for West Yorkshire.
“We can now look forward to the National Chambers’ finals, as well as our other award nominations in the tourism and hospitality sectors due to be announced later this year.”
Storthes Hall Park is now in the running for a National Chambers Award to be held at the Chamber Business Awards Gala Dinner on Thursday 28th November at the Tobacco Dock, London. The Chamber Business Awards is one of the showpiece events in the business calendar, recognising and promoting the best of British business.
SHP is up against nine other regional winners from across England, Scotland and Wales.
This is the third award nomination Storthes Hall Park has attracted in less than two months , coming on the back of an extensive refurbishment programme.
SHP will be hoping to lift a trophy after being shortlisted in both the Business Events Venue of the Year and New Tourism Business award categories.
Storthes Hall Park Business Development Manager Miriam Pedersen-Smith said: “This is turning out to be a transformative year for the Storthes Hall Park and the award nominations are fantastic news for the team who have worked so hard over the past 12 months.”
White Rose Award chair Elaine Lemm said: “This year’s panel of prestigious industry-wide experts have been well and truly put through their paces shortlisting for the recently revamped White Rose Awards. With the standard of entries continuing to rise, competition was fierce, and choosing finalists not easy. With the attention to detail, passion and sheer hard work seen from so many superb businesses, it is easy to see why Yorkshire has an outstanding reputation for tourism and hospitality.”
The glitzy awards ceremony, which celebrates the very best in food, drink, accommodation and attractions in Yorkshire, will take place at the Leeds First Direct Arena in November.
Storthes Hall Park near Huddersfield has successfully reinvented itself as a top corporate and wedding venue after adopting a new business and marketing strategy, backed up by a significant investment.
Turnover has increased significantly over the last 12 months as bookings for weddings and corporate events have surged following owners, South Street Asset Management, investing more than £2m in the venue and parkland.
Traditionally been known as offering only student accommodation, in 2018/19 its corporate and team building bookings have grown by an incredible 80 per cent.
Following on from the investment Storthes Hall has since been nominated for four tourism and business awards this year and created further full and part-time roles on the site. As well as a major revamp of the conferencing facilities and accommodation within Storthes Hall, the decision to bring catering provision in-house has proved to be a winning formula.
Storthes Hall Park Operation Director said: “This is been a transformative year for the venue and we anticipate further double-digit growth next year. With that we will create further employment opportunities at the Hall and hope to work with more local businesses and suppliers as part of our community-first ethos.”
Business Development Manager Miriam Pedersen-Smith added: “The award nominations have already helped put Storthes Hall Park on the map as a top business and wedding destination in West Yorkshire, but bringing our catering function in-house also allowed us to source and use local producers which is helping to boost the local economy.”
Storthes Hall Park currently has plans to recruit further staff for the accommodation, marketing and hospitality teams later this year. It currently offers 83 well-appointed bedrooms including a family/bridal apartment, executive rooms, five contemporary meeting rooms with restaurant and bar facility, all set in 44 acres of parkland.
The new-look website can be found at www.stortheshall.co.uk.

Emley Moor rugby club are looking for businesses that are local to their community rugby club to get involved in the club.
They currently have junior teams from Under 7s up to Under 16s for boys and girls and are about to start pre-season training with a new open age team. They are passionate about rugby league and the opportunities and lessons that it gives the youngsters and also about bringing together the local community to enjoy sport and the social aspect that being part of the rugby community also brings.
They are currently fundraising in order to build some club facilities which would include 6 changing rooms plus a kitchen and function room so that they can invite their visiting teams and all spectators to enjoy refreshments during and after the games. These facilities will also be open to, and available for, the local business community as well as the schools and other sports clubs.
As part of their fundraising efforts they have put together a sponsorship package and would encourage you to get involved on some level, there are various options available and these are detailed below.
For all business partners they endeavour to support your business by actively talking about you and your services/product both on and offline amongst their community, they have a large and growing community of players, parents and supporters who are your potential future customers and they also have links with Huddersfield Giants and Wakefield Trinity as well as various business owners throughout the Yorkshire area.
If you would like to support your local rugby league club in any way then please email firstname.lastname@example.org and let them know how you would wish to support the venture.
To be involved you/your group simply need to create some amazing lanterns using appropriate safe materials. Please note – containers made from glass are not suitable. The lanterns will need to be lit by other means than naked flames & the lighting will need to be effective. Glow sticks are great on their own, but if diffused by paper or plastic their light diminishes considerably. It would not be good for young people making lights and lanterns to be disappointed by poor lighting.
Here are a few important things you need to know. Apologies if you know them already, if so they can act as a reminder:
By saying Yes to being involved in the event, you are agreeing to all of the above. Thus ensuring a successful event for all.
Ewan Scott from the Navigators said “If you have any questions please get in touch, we are more than happy to help. We want to make this event even more creative and fun for everyone involved.”
Upper Dearne Valley Navigators was created five years ago at the request of parents and young people after Ewan and Fiona Scott left the local Scout Group that they’d run for the best part of 20 years.
Ewan Scott said “We had no intention of starting anything else, we felt that we deserved a break. However, within a week of us resigning we had calls from parents and young people asking could we do something for them.
“We trialled a non-uniformed group doing the same activities as we used to do with Scouts and the demand was there, so we set up Upper Dearne Valley Navigators. We are considered by some as competition to the established uniformed groups locally, but in reality, we offer something slightly different that appeals to a different set of young people, only a handful of our current members were ever in Scouts or Guides.”
The new group started officially in September 2014, and the Leadership team was joined by James Drainer, Leanne and Maria Glover and Carol Power, all of whom had previously been part of the team at the Scout Group.
Since then Navigators has grown to offer two age ranges, covering in all, from 7 – 18 years. Across the Group there are 40 youth members and demand is growing.
Activities offered include archery, canoeing, cooking, camps, climbing, games, crafts, fire skills, circus skills, kayaking, laserquest, axe throwing and just about anything else you can imagine.
The group has run two international trips for its older members, one to the Ardennes and the other to Alsace – both included visits to war memorials, visits to The Menin Gate, canoeing, city visits, and much more. A third trip is proposed for 2020.
Additionally, Navigators sponsored a funding application to allow free two hour sports sessions at the Skelmanthorpe Community Centre, with two trained coached for 39 weeks during term time. The Group is open to similar packages that help offer activity to the wider youth and children’s community in the Upper Dearne Valley.
About Upper Dearne Valley Navigators
We are a non-uniformed youth group following the basic principles of scouting as laid out over 100 years ago. Navigators is non-religious, non-political and we are open to any young person who comes to us with parental support and a real interest in being part of the group.
We are one of around five Navigator Groups in the UK, but interest is growing.
Navigators started in New York City in 2003 when a Scout Troop sponsored by a Unitarian Church found itself at odds with the attitudes displayed by Boy Scouts America towards minorities. The Navigators movement now has 257 Chapters in the USA, it has a group in France, at Toulouse and another in Uganda, plus of course, the UK Groups in Huddersfield, Lincoln, Dover, Teignmouth, Newton Abbot, with another two expected to open by September.

Earlier this month the HD8 Network organised a photoshoot with the amazing John Steel Photography, inviting members and other organisations that are involved with the HD8 Network or who ‘Work’ in the HD8 area to come along and have their picture taken.
We used John Steel Photography in 2015 when we built our website, however recently, when designing a pop-up banner for the She Means Business Instagram Workshop that we hosted in June – delivered by Social Progress – we noticed that some of the images were out of date; One business has recently retired and closed their company, another has relocated to Sheffield and others had pursued different avenues in their careers.
To provide continuity from the previous photoshoot and existing catalogue of images, we asked our ‘models’ to bring props that illustrated their business. For some this was incredibly easy – for example the Roofer and the Marquee Hire Company – however the services, particularly the online services, were much harder and required much more creative, out of the box thinking, but we got there. Can you can guess correctly what they do …?
The morning was VERY busy, with some people just being able to pop in, squeezing it into their busy working day and others staying for longer and using the time to network and build relationships with the other people that came along. Jo Cove from ‘Made in Clayton West‘, a local community organisation, said the atmosphere was buzzing and that there was a great bunch of people.
Member and regular attendee of our monthly Meetup networking events, Paul Campbell from the Effective Group, was kind enough to let us the use their new offices at Westleigh House in Denby Dale for our studio. This was the perfect venue and we thank them enormously.
We are very grateful to everyone involved who came along and made the day super special and more importantly for creating such fantastic images.
However, of course we give all our thanks to the very talented John Steel, who used his own unique personality and banter to get the best out of the models and produce the most amazing photos. Thank you.
We will be using these photos in our future promotions and literature, so keep a look out for this. We had so much fun organising and arranging the day, and have a long list of people that would have loved to have been involved but weren’t able to, that we would like to do another soon.

Local businesses, specifically startups and those adopting social media for the first time for business use were invited to attend and be shown the powers of Instagram and how it could be used for business purposes.
Esther delivered the presentation with her bubbly personality and extensive expertise and knowledge, and all the attendees agreed that it had been a very informative and useful event.
We were certainly inspired and found ourselves with renewed enthusiasm for this promotional publishing tool, prompting several images to be shared in the following days. We hope to build on this and adopt it as a tool to engage with and find followers, furthering our communication channels.
The key takeaway point for us was that businesses should have a business profile as opposed to an individual account – which is very easy to do.
The training workshop was held at The Venue in Storthes Hall Park – where we hold our monthly Meetup networking events – and everyone agreed that it is the perfect venue for this and many other types of events – it’s even a great place to go for a coffee, something to eat or maybe something a bit stronger with family and friends. Storthes Hall feels like a hidden gem, as if you are in the middle of nowhere, although you are no more than 15 minutes from Huddersfield Town Centre or the M1 (depending which way you drive).
