Hats off to emerging HD8 business women

I don’t know if our word has anything to do with anything, but the HD8 Network would like to take its hat off to some amazing emerging business women in the HD8 area.

Ellen has adapted and pivoted like a dream during this time, whilst juggling homeschooling of TWO children under 5.

The Boutique can be found in Nortonthorpe Mills in Scissett, and was due to open just after the announcement of lockdown; after months of careful, strategic planning and organising.

So instead Ellen launched the business on Facebook and Instagram, selling items virtually and thankfully (well quite rightly) has so far made a massive success.

The doors of the boutique are now wide open and welcoming you to revitalise your wardrobe.

Well done Ellen you should be very proud of yourself!

Jayne had embraced self empowerment (that was a mistype, but I like it, so it’s staying in) like myself.  If you’re going to set up a business, you might as well do two at the same time!

She has seen a gap in the market – a professional place to work and meet in the HD8 area – and gone for it and created the Flex Collective in Denby Dale.

Jayne has quite rightly remarked in the past that there are loads of nice cafes in the area with amazing views and refreshments, but they are not always the professional setting without distractions that is required.

PS – as new businesses they probably didn’t qualify for ANY OF THE GOVERNMENT SUPPORT available during Covid and lockdown.

Not the council led grants for businesses with PROPERTY, including possibly either of the discretionary grants (which again just offers support to businesses with property).

They won’t have had a history of accounts and so won’t be eligible for SEISS (Self employed income support scheme) if they are classed as self employed.

If they had the legal structure of a Limited Company, they still wouldn’t have got anything, apart from the option to furlough themselves – but like we mentioned there was no employment history to base this on and if they had of been able to take this option, it would have quite possibly kissed goodbye to any of their hopes and dreams, as under furlough you’re not able to do any work – especially not income generating.

Instead they have striven on admirably …

… despite the amounting costs of stock, furniture, property, legal fees, utilities and all the other endless bills associated with running a business, with reduced or diminished public confidence to go out and shop or be around others and both having children not at school that also need occupying.

((Btw – if you don’t agree about the situation of these ladies and other, let’s say the Forgotten. Please get in touch with your MP, the FSB and others that need to hear your voice and examples to help argue the case) rant over …)

She decided that working from home all the time was not good for her, she found it lonely and missed collaborating with her ex colleagues, customers and suppliers.

Well many of us have had a taste of that now and there are not a lot of people who have actually enjoyed working from home for the last 4 months, whilst home schooling kids or with the other half under the feet or maybe just being alone all that time.

Yes, many of us have discovered the power of the online video meeting even for our social lives as well as work but let’s be honest, we are so over that aren’t we?

The fact remains that nothing can beat being around people, the banter, having someone make you a brew and generally just being somewhere other than your own house.

As pubs and restaurants reopen and people get back to some sort of normality, the government are set to change the ‘work from home’ advice that they have been dishing out since March and are now saying we can go to work.

It still remains to be seen whether employers will force their employees to go to the office (yes, by law they can do this), or whether they will be open to more flexible arrangements, or even will tell their employees to carry on working from home for the foreseeable future.

Over the last few weeks they have had quite a few people trying out the space and all have said they will be back once they can properly get their lives back, so that is looking like it will be September time as many still have childcare issues and many are just not ready to come out of their homes yet. However, over the next month or so hopefully people will grow in confidence and we can all get back to work properly (whatever properly means!)

As well as the space for co-working there is also a large meeting room which can be hired out by the hour, half day or full day for private meetings, training workshops and networking events, whatever you need it for really.

There have been a couple of workshops run in this space already with very limited numbers so that they could maintain a social distance but both were really well received and there will be more to come.

Amongst others there will be another wordpress workshop for those of us with wordpress sites that we don’t know how to update, a social media strategy workshop to help local businesses define what their strategy should be and how to reach their target customer and also a facebook ads workshop.

Apply for the second round of the Local Authority Small Business Discretionary Grant Fund

Kirklees Council has made a second and final round of the Local Authority Discretionary Grant fund available to help small businesses that have been impacted by COVID-19.

Kirklees discretionary grant fundGrants of up to £10,000 are being made available to businesses with ongoing fixed property-related costs that have not received funding in round one and are not eligible for other Government grant schemes, including the Small Business Grant Fund and the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant Fund.

This fund is available to the following types of businesses:

  • Manufacturing businesses with their own business rate assessment with a ‘Rateable Value’ of over £15,000 and less than £51,000
  • Businesses that wholly or mainly supply the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Sector with their own business rates assessment with a ‘Rateable Value’ of over £15,000 and less than £51,000
  • OFSTED registered childcare providers

Businesses must also meet the following criteria to be eligible:

  • Be a small or micro business
  • Have relatively high, ongoing fixed property-related costs
  • Be able to demonstrate they have suffered a significant fall in income due to the COVID-19 crisis
  • Have been trading on 11th March 2020
  • Occupy property, or part of a property, with a rateable value or annual rent or annual mortgage payments below £51,000

HD8 gets a brand-new co-working and meeting Venue

With a host of businesses as well as a myriad of remote workers living in the area, it is not before time that we are about to have a dedicated co-working and meeting space in Denby Dale that is open to anyone in or out of the area.

The Flex Collective is the brainchild of Jayne Adamson who herself worked from home, alone, throughout 2019 and found it both challenging and lonely.  She decided to look for a coworking space to hang out in but liked the idea of staying local, avoiding costly travel and parking costs as well as the commute time.  Until now nothing like this existed in our area so Jayne decided to set it up herself.

The space, which is inside Westleigh House near to the train station, will have a co-working area that holds 9 people and as the name suggests is totally flexible to the needs of its members.  Whether you want somewhere to work just a day a week or three days a week or just to use it on an ad-hoc basis that is entirely up to you.  It works via a membership scheme on the basis that the more you use it the better value it is.

As well as the co-working side of things, Jayne also recognised the need for the area to have a professional meeting space so has designed this flexible space so that it can work as a business lounge for small non private meetings and also can be booked out by the hour or the day for any kind of meeting for up to 24 people.

There will be training workshops held there which are designed to help business owners to drive their businesses forward with the first ones booked in for very small groups to concentrate on their social media strategy where the attendees will learn how to set their strategy, what platforms they should be posting on and how to set them up and use them to get the best from them.  They will also get 121 advice following the workshop from The Flex Collectives very own social media manager.

And finally, as one of the many challenges that Jayne has recognised being a home worker is the lack of access to office equipment, there will be printing, photocopying and binding facilities, in face anything you would expect to find in a fully stocked office available to members, visitors and the general public.

The aim of The Flex Collective as a business is not just about the space, it is about creating a community of supportive ‘colleagues’ who’s advice and experience we can each call upon if we have a particular challenge and also to have a relaxed and friendly atmosphere to work or meet in whenever the mood takes us.

With government advice changing so quickly Jayne has been ensuring that the space is a safe place to be and is hoping to open the doors officially on the 6th of July.  She is currently offering show arounds on a one to one basis for anyone interested in having a look and a social distanced chat and cuppa.  Please do get in touch with her if you want a nosey.

Turnover has increased significantly over the last 12 months as bookings for weddings and corporate events have surged following owners, South Street Asset Management, investing more than £2m in the venue and parkland.

Traditionally been known as offering only student accommodation, in 2018/19 its corporate and team building bookings have grown by an incredible 80 per cent.

Following on from the investment Storthes Hall has since been nominated for four tourism and business awards this year and created further full and part-time roles on the site. As well as a major revamp of the conferencing facilities and accommodation within Storthes Hall, the decision to bring catering provision in-house has proved to be a winning formula.
