New technical updates

To improve your experience we have invested in some technical updates on our website.

These updates will improve your ability to measure the benefits and impact you receive from the HD8 Network.

Call to Action Button

We have created a Call to Action Button on Directory Listings.

This will help you to direct visitors to undertake certain actions.  This could be for a special offer or focused on an area of work or product range.

We recommend that members create unique landing pages for traffic from our listings.  This will allow you to measure the impact received from your membership.

Members can update their ‘Call to Action Button’ by emailing us with details to be included.

Google Maps

We have fixed Google Maps on the Event Listings, following changes Google made last year, controlling the access to the information.

But please remember to include contact details and links to directory listings to make it as easy as possible for potential attendees come to your events.

Source and Medium

We have added some code into our website, so that you can measure the traffic from our website to yours, in your Google Analytics.

Contact us for a guide to find this information in your Google Analytics.

Chat Box

At the bottom right hand of the screen you will see a little chat box.  Chat to us when you have questions or queries.

It is us, so apologies if  we don’t always respond immediately—especially in the middle of the night or when we’re in meetings.

We’d love the opportunity to explain these updates further so please get in touch!

Sponsor a networking event

Over the years the HD8 Network has brought you a range of speakers; experts in their fields and local businesses, providing insights and overviews, inspiring and informing attendees to help them become better businesses.

In November we were honoured to have Revell Ward sponsor a lunch following our event.  We believe it was in gratitude for the event, as Jenifer has attended off and on over the years and supports our aim.

It was nice to see lots of new faces, and everyone seemed to have a jolly good time, we hope to see them again in the future.

We have introduced a ‘bring a guest and get a credit at your next event’ promotion, which is encouraging members to invite new faces and this is having a positive impact on the numbers of attendees and conversations had each month.

We have also introduced a Contribution Slip, for attendees to help us record the impact that we are making in the local area as a result of our events and network.

If your organisation would like to sponsor one of networking events and provide lunch following one of our mid morning mid month meetup networking events, then please get in touch.

our Top 5 things blog

If I had a top 5 top thing, to celebrate our 5th anniversary, I would have to pick my favourite surprise organisations …

Number one – Boom, it has to be Think Forensics.

Wow what a business.  What a concept.  What an amazing woman behind it.

Number two – The Pigs in the Woods.

I must confess I have never visited or made contact, however I LOVE driving past it.  Perhaps a bit dangerous trying to point out the pigs to the kid while driving …. But makes my heart sing a bit.

Number three – Shepley Spring Festival.

I have stolen the description “a mini Glastonbury”.  I mentioned above, an amazing woman, but this Festival is also a credit to the amazing team work that can pull off an international 3-day music festival year on year, despite council and other funding cuts and other obstacles – including the weather in some years!!

Number four – There are so many that I could choose from it is so hard to single out, but I would have to pick the community amenities –

  1. The community libraries seem to have been a great success and popular and have been an impressive response to “the cuts”.
  2. Emley Community Centre, Football Club and Wentworth rooms was a delight the other year and is an impressive community area with so much potential. However, there are also many other sports and recreation clubs across the HD8 area it seems so harsh to single any out.
  3. Cliffe House is an adventure I know will continue to grow for me. I love the history of it – my MiL (Mother in Law) has stayed here … sorry that’s misleading, she’s not that old – she went on here school trip …. My little one isn’t just old enough for the adventure play equipment, but I can’t wait to give it a try.  I did a stewarding session at Shepley Spring Festival the other year and the acoustics in the stables, I kept being told, where amazing!
  4. Scissett Baths – This has been my second office over the last year … not necessarily working, instead working out. It is great facility, but hard work to get to grips with timetables and the classes are so popular, it’s tricky to book.  You must be dedicated, but the facilities are amazing (not forgetting the history) – and it’s one of the longest pools in Kirklees …
  5. Now I am torn between the great facilities for kids or just plummeting for Springfield Mills; especially after Jelly Beans and the transformation she has made (along with support from the other units) …. Leapfrogs too has recently gone through an amazing transformation, as has Kirklees Light Railways – have you been to their outside park in Clayton West recently? And of course, there are the other amazingly run community playgroups, stay and plays, etc, without forgetting the little parks dotted everywhere … However, Spingfield Mills, essentially should be your retail dream … a perfect way to spend your time …. The variety of shops/units in there, the service that is provided (most of the time) the quality and variety that is available, however ….

Number five – I have run out of numbers! Can I lump together in one all the other amazing organisations in the area?

  1. The back-bedroom businesses
  2. The (wo)man with a van services that keep our house, gardens, family and all other sorts of elements in our lives and business in working order
  3. The shops, beauticians, restaurants and entertainment activities, as well as events
  4. The employers, the national and international companies, the manufacturers, fabricators, engineers, ecommerce …
  5. The non-profit organisations that organise our social lives

Wow, I never thought it was going to be so hard to leave out so much.  My mind is racing with the number of organisations and people that I haven’t mentioned, however I mean no offence when I do so.

Can you do better?  What are your top 5?

It doesn’t have to be so far reaching as mine #coverallangels #anglesaswell

Post on our social media, email your articles to info@HD8network.co.uk or just generally tell people what is great and what is happening in the area.

We love The Venue

OMG it was amazing!

Wow wow wow! We fell in love with the Venue last year but couldn’t find mutually agreeable dates.  However …..

Our first meeting at The Venue yesterday was amazing!

All the attendees said how easy it was to get to, how much free parking was available and what a wonderful setting it was; both the leafy peaceful grounds that is just 10 minutes from Town or from the far reaches of HD8 area, as well as the multipurpose modern and clean facilities.

One of our regular and loyal attendees said, “That is was the MOST useful meeting I have been to in the past 4 years” (just to clarify, she wasn’t saying the others hadn’t been … she wouldn’t come almost every month if that was the case!).

So, what are you waiting for?  Put the future dates in your diary and get your tickets booked!

It’s the Venue for HD8 Network Mid Month Meetups

We have a new venue for our informal and friendly business networking events, which are focused on making and building relationships in the local area.

The next Mid Month Meetup event, on 13th March 2018 between 12 and 2pm, will be at The Venue within Storthes Hall Park, with our usual speed networking sessions and a welcome talk from The Venue.

Book your tickets now – www.HD8NetworkMMM-March.Eventbrite.co.uk

The Venue at Storthes Hall is the new venue for the HD8 Network Mid Month Meet Up

The Venue at Storthes Hall Park underwent a major refurbishment project 18 month back costing 3/4million pounds.

The Venue dominates a large standalone building over two floors, comprising of a bar, cinema, eGaming room, large function area and two smaller activity areas with table tennis and pool available, and that’s only downstairs!

Essentially a student café bar, the Venue provides areas upstairs where computers and meeting rooms can be used, for studies as well as being rented out to the business community.

The Venue is also used by many dog walkers and people exploring the vast area covered within the park.

The Venue at Storthes Hall is the new venue for the HD8 Network Mid Month Meet UpThere is plenty of parking and you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere, however you are no more than 15 minutes out of town or from the other far reaching areas of the HD8 postcode. It is one of the many hidden jewels of the area which the HD8 Network strive to reveal.

The buildings that greet you as you drive into the park, before you reach the Venue, is the accommodation for the Huddersfield University students and along a long roadway opposite the Venue, lives Shelley Football fields and Stafflex Arena.

The Venue has also been used by the team at AD:VENTURE to deliver some of their business growth workshop sessions.

Discussions had taken place between the Venue and HD8 Network last year, however diaries were clashing, and a consistent pattern of dates could not be agreed. Around the same time the Coffee Loft became available and have perfectly suited the Meetup since. However, having the room to grow has become a key objective for the HD8 Network’s future. Merewyn says “The Coffee Loft have been so accommodating and the Christmas Tapas lunch we had was divine. It will be a shame not to have the excuse to visit regularly, however it will drive us to support them in a variety of different ways, enabling others to receive their warmth of greeting and service.”

The proven format will remain the same for the Mid Month Meetups

The Venue at Storthes Hall is the new venue for the HD8 Network Mid Month Meet Up

Businesses will be paired off for the Speed Networking sessions, each having 5-6 minutes to introduce their business and let others know about their advancements and offers. This structured approach brings energy to the room and helps you identify quickly whether you want to follow up the conversation at another time.

Everyone gets to have conversations with at least half of the people in the room – on occasion this can go into extra time, but the organiser refers to it as ‘Carnage’.

Pairs are managed by a timekeeper ringing a bell to indicate the halfway point – where most people swap talkers – and a whistle signally for the ‘mover’ to rotate to their next candidate.

This type of networking gets you engaged without having to stand up and perfect, or not, your public speaking skills.

The HD8 Network also bring interesting and useful speakers to the Mid Month Meetup networking event, which also allows members the opportunity to provide a ten-minute overview of their business. This month it seems fitting that the spotlight will be on Storthes Hall Park and the Venue.

Before the Mid Month Meetup delegates are invited to a peer to peer workshop, to help them discover the news stories they want to tell people about. Merewyn says, “Our workshops explaining the membership and ways people could use our offering were well received, showing a desire to learn more. And there seems to be a real buzz at the moment about peer to peer support with many success stories evolving from this experience. The HD8 Network are focused on creating a culture of collaboration and peer support. It’s about supporting the local economy and making where we work, rest and play a better place … even more than it is now, which is already amazing.”

“There are many people who live in the area and commute far for work, and many that live far away however commute here for work. One of the visions for the HD8 Network is to challenge that balance and reduce travel time and congestion, freeing up more time for rest and play, inviting more visitors to the area and supporting the wonderful leisure, retail and food organisations here”.

The HD8 Network online events calendar and social media communities, as well as the e-newsletter, news blogs and business directory make this all possible.

For most, it is free at the point of service, however for businesses wanting to reach more people and develop their profile there is a small charge to help cover running costs and develop the platform into something that delivers the service that makes your life more fun, easier and local.

Cliffe Woods Gets Illuminated

Saturday the 11th November saw Clayton West’s Cliffe Woods come to life with colour, light and people like never before. The simply entitled “Light Up The Woods” took place with the local woodlands and gardens lit up by a spectacle of lightcraft and firecraft.

The event hosted by Cliffe Woods Conservation Group stemmed from an idea originated by Upper Dearne Valley Navigators.  The light from lanterns playing on the trees during an early spring BBQ gave the youth group the idea of lighting up the woods.

The concept was taken up by the Cliffe Woods Conservation Group and a Facebook Group for “Light Up The Woods” drew support from over 200 local people in just a few days.

Although originated by Navigators the project was open to all community groups in the area and saw considerable support from Kayes School, Beavers, Cubs, Mother and Toddler Groups, the local churches and other supporters.

Holmfirth community artist Barry Russell donated lanterns from his exhibition in Holmfirth and that added an impetus to the event.  In the run up to “Light Up The Woods”, young people got inventive making lanterns: Some just simple card and glowstick lamps, through to larger projects the aim was to bring the community together and it garnered huge support from people across the area, from Upper Denby to Emley, people put time into making lights and lanterns for this magical moment.

Claire Westwood, from Cliffe Woods Conservation Group said, “We are overwhelmed by the participation and the number of people coming up to enjoy the woods. Hopefully more people will recognise the asset we have in Cliffe Woods and we will see its popularity growing as a result of this event.”

For Navigators, Ewan Scott added, “This has been a spectacular success. What started out as a campfire discussion grew into something that brought people together and created an event where everyone contributed to make it happen.”

Andy Wickham, Volunteer Co-ordinator, with Kirklees, who own Cliffe Woods, worked to ensure that the council would grant permission for the event, and the organisers would like to thank Andy for his support.

Merewyn Sayers from HD8 Network sponsored the event with a donation of glow sticks.

A special exhibit came from Andy Marshall, who brought along his model hot air balloon and gave a static demonstration of how the balloons work.

Made in Clayton West played a key role in co-ordinating the various participating groups. Participating groups included: All Saints’ Church, Bikeshed Digital Media, Clayton West Chorus, Children from Kaye’s First & Nursery School, Clayton West Baby & Toddler Group, Clayton West Beavers and Cubs, Joseph Norton Academy, Kidz Klub, Upper Dearne Valley Navigators with participants in the groups coming from every village in the Upper Dearne Valley – so a true community-wide event.

There are early plans for a repeat event for 2018. Anyone wishing to participate should join the Light Up The Woods Facebook Group and feel free to join the discussions, offer ideas, or even get involved with lantern making.

Making paste is a tasty business

Our next networking event will be on Tuesday 14th November.

Joining us at the Coffee Loft in Scissett, Krishna Patel, of Dilishque Curry Paste, Your Indian Pantry in a Pot, will share with you her story of how a curry paste that was originally made for her has now become a family business.

Dilishque Curry PasteResearch shows that to capture attention and gain shelf space; large manufactures are mimicking smaller nostalgic traditional brands. Krishna say’s “We have the knowledge and patience for blending spices which has been passed down through generations establishing a strong heritage.” However, this versatile curry paste was not originally made for commercial use.

The challenges that Krishna and her mother faced when producing homemade meals has led to the product they have today and help solve some of their customers and consumers challenges:

  • Knowledge of blending spices and creating an authentic tasting curry
  • Lack of time – planning meals, shopping for individual ingredients and cooking

With 23 million curry lovers in the UK, Dilishque Curry Paste is well placed to solve the challenge of making authentic tasting curries when you are pressed for time.

Since launching in 2015 Dilishque Curry Paste has sold through their website, Food & Drink Festivals and curry demonstrations, where people have a chance to “try before you buy”.

She will explain why it was made and the process of validating the idea and how to use such a versatile product.

So what are you waiting for? Book your tickets now

Also at the networking event, we will be speed networking; giving you the chance to have a 5 minute conversation with at least half the people in the room.

The 10-minute Marketing Plan

Sayers Solutions will be the speaker at this month’s HD8 Network’s Mid-Month Meet Up business networking event on the 11th October at the Coffee Loft in Scissett and will be discussing the “10-minute Marketing Plan”.

Merewyn Sayers at Solutions SolutionsMerewyn Sayers, the owner of Sayers Solutions, will be showing small business owners the vital parts of the marketing plan which should not be overlooked.  Merewyn says, “When people approach marketing, then head straight for the promotion elements, however there is a lot more that needs to be established beforehand”.  The 10-minute Marketing Plan is intended to help busy business owners balance the time-poor day to day running of the business with the need to be strategic and plan for the future and not depend on being hand to mouth”.

Merewyn adds “It is unrealistic for small business owners to spend months solely on their marketing plan, ignoring the running of their business, especially when the plan is neglected after its completed.  A marketing plan should be a living document, and whilst this session demonstrates you can have a marketing plan in 10 minutes, it also reinforces the point that you should be spending 10 minutes on your marketing plan each week”.

Sayers Solutions works with small businesses to help them be better at what they do.  Essentially Merewyn becomes your marketing manager – one of her clients refers to her as their “head of marketing” – this can be on a weekly basis or a one-off training workshop and anything in between.

Whilst Sayers Solutions urges clients to think strategically and understand their offering, as well as their client’s needs, they also implement tactics and campaigns.  This can sometimes involve working with partners who specialise is certain areas, at the customers discretion.

Merewyn also setup the HD8 Network 4 years ago, as she identified the need for a platform for local businesses and residents to communicate and promote the activities in the area.

Before the networking event there will also be a workshop for local businesses to find out more about the HD8 Network and how they can use it to promote their business.  This is a free workshop, however places are limited and so booking is essential.

To book your tickets for either the networking event or workshop please visit www.HD8network.eventbrite.co.uk or contact Merewyn on 07790705223.  Alternatively you can visit the website www.HD8network.co.uk or connect on social media www.HD8network.co.uk/contact-us/social-media-communities/

The focus for the Page is for us to be able to push information out to you guys and for you to like and comment on as you please.  The Groups on the other hand it’s completely up to you how they are used (within legal and ethical boundaries of course). Groups are communities on Facebook enabling you to communicate with others with similar focuses. Many use groups for selling items, whilst this was never our intention for this to be the case, it is a powerful enabler for us to recycle the loved items we don’t want any more.

We are also active on Twitter, Linkedin and Google + and dabble with Instagram. Again these are mostly used for us to push information out to you guys, but we are a chatty bunch and love a bit of banter and would love to engage with you about the HD8 area (always with a positive attitude of course!) using these platforms.

Physical Meetings

For the past 4 years we have held monthly networking events for businesses and other organisations to meet and build relationships, finding new customers, sources of information and shared interests.

We have also held 2 Business Shows, which were full day events revolving around seminars and exhibitors as well as networking opportunities and business relationships being formed and developed.

Email

We have an email marketing circulation, which we want to develop enabling you to pick and choose whether they wish to hear about Work, Rest or Play topics.

But none of this works without you, so whether you Work, Rest or Play in the area, get involved and join in.

Engage with us on social media, visit our website, sign up to our mailing list and if you are an event organiser list your event or activities on our online calendar and if you are a business or other organisation then at least get a basic listing on our online directory.

If you would like to find out more about the promotion aspects of the HD8 Network please visit www.HD8 network.co.uk/Join/ or contact us to chat about it.
