Jayne Adamson creator of the Flex CollectiveThe Flex Collective was set up by Jayne Adamson who had been working at home since starting her marketing business (she helps product led businesses with their strategy and marketing) in February 2019.

She decided that working from home all the time was not good for her, she found it lonely and missed collaborating with her ex colleagues, customers and suppliers.

Well many of us have had a taste of that now and there are not a lot of people who have actually enjoyed working from home for the last 4 months, whilst home schooling kids or with the other half under the feet or maybe just being alone all that time.

Yes, many of us have discovered the power of the online video meeting even for our social lives as well as work but let’s be honest, we are so over that aren’t we?

The fact remains that nothing can beat being around people, the banter, having someone make you a brew and generally just being somewhere other than your own house.

As pubs and restaurants reopen and people get back to some sort of normality, the government are set to change the ‘work from home’ advice that they have been dishing out since March and are now saying we can go to work.

It still remains to be seen whether employers will force their employees to go to the office (yes, by law they can do this), or whether they will be open to more flexible arrangements, or even will tell their employees to carry on working from home for the foreseeable future.

Over the last few weeks they have had quite a few people trying out the space and all have said they will be back once they can properly get their lives back, so that is looking like it will be September time as many still have childcare issues and many are just not ready to come out of their homes yet. However, over the next month or so hopefully people will grow in confidence and we can all get back to work properly (whatever properly means!)

Flex Collective workshop

As well as the space for co-working there is also a large meeting room which can be hired out by the hour, half day or full day for private meetings, training workshops and networking events, whatever you need it for really.

There have been a couple of workshops run in this space already with very limited numbers so that they could maintain a social distance but both were really well received and there will be more to come.

Amongst others there will be another wordpress workshop for those of us with wordpress sites that we don’t know how to update, a social media strategy workshop to help local businesses define what their strategy should be and how to reach their target customer and also a facebook ads workshop.

Apply for the second round of the Local Authority Small Business Discretionary Grant Fund

Kirklees Council has made a second and final round of the Local Authority Discretionary Grant fund available to help small businesses that have been impacted by COVID-19.

Kirklees discretionary grant fundGrants of up to £10,000 are being made available to businesses with ongoing fixed property-related costs that have not received funding in round one and are not eligible for other Government grant schemes, including the Small Business Grant Fund and the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant Fund.

This fund is available to the following types of businesses:

  • Manufacturing businesses with their own business rate assessment with a ‘Rateable Value’ of over £15,000 and less than £51,000
  • Businesses that wholly or mainly supply the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Sector with their own business rates assessment with a ‘Rateable Value’ of over £15,000 and less than £51,000
  • OFSTED registered childcare providers

Businesses must also meet the following criteria to be eligible:

  • Be a small or micro business
  • Have relatively high, ongoing fixed property-related costs
  • Be able to demonstrate they have suffered a significant fall in income due to the COVID-19 crisis
  • Have been trading on 11th March 2020
  • Occupy property, or part of a property, with a rateable value or annual rent or annual mortgage payments below £51,000

So, moving forwards, as part of the SlingLibary.com’s covid-19 recovery plan, they are looking forward to regular walks. Bringing parents and families together in a socially distanced way, enabling contact without putting ourselves in a situation that feels unsafe or that we’re not comfortable with.

Bringing parents together in the fresh air which is well documented to improve mental wellbeing.

But it will be more than that, each week they will discuss a theme, bring the world to life for your little ones and give play ideas to use throughout the week with your babies and young children.

At the moment there are regular walks planned in Scissett and Wyke, with travelling walks as our family life allows.

They are starting a 3 month project; to record the impact this has on families at the end of August.
After then sessions will cost £6.  It is advisable to block book to get the most out of the play ideas and learn about helping your baby develop.
While the SlingLibrary.com are fine tuning their walks they are offering their time and expertise in exchange for donations.

Wow! I didn’t know all that was available!

HD8 Network Wow! I did not know all that was availableDo you know how often we are told this when we finally get a chance to speak to people and explain what we offer?

So many people have a preconception of what it is we do and do you know how hard it is to overcome a preconception?

Most people know us for our networking events and we realise that this is probably entirely our fault, as we need to regularly promote them to make sure that we get the bums on seats … especially now they are happening twice a month!

But I think the association to these type of events is due to us having #Network in our name (Even my daughter calls it HD8 Networking Event – but I think she does it to wind me up).

But a Network is exactly what we are.
We are a platform for communication in the HD8 area of Huddersfield.

Other people think that we are just Facebook Groups and many possibly don’t realise that we manage a range of them. We have recently changed our posting policy in the Facebook Groups, so that now only members of the HD8 Network can promote their business in there … but do you know how much confusion that has caused? LOADS!! Especially, we think because you can be a member of a Facebook Group, as well as a member of the HD8 Network. And we often have people tell us they are a member of the HD8 Network when they are not even subscribed to our mailing list – possibly haven’t even visited our website.

One of the things that nearly everyone thinks that we do – which we definitely don’t – is publish and distribute the magazine through your door #DefinitelyNotUs

What most people don’t realise is that we ALSO have an online events calendar, business directory, share content via our news page on our website and on our social media channels, have a mailing list of engaged subscribes, offer a range of membership packages for businesses to promote themselves, as well as provide account management to help our members get the exposure they desire.

We are also developing packages for the larger businesses in the area, to compliment their CSR and employee benefit policies and we go out of our way to help community groups and charities.

HD8 Network Social Meetup

We are well known for holding events for businesses Meetups, however our Social Meetup will purely be a social event and have a strict no selling policy.

This event is focused on those who rest and play in the area.

To talk about what we have been up to for leisure and pleasure. Or how homeschooling is going. What walks people have been on. The wonderful sights they have seen in the HD8 area.

Perhaps you might want to talk about the places you have been able to buy things, however this is not a promotional event – by all means let people know if you run a business. But think about this as the pub or church coffee morning – this is purely a social event.

Icebreaker

It is always easier to start a conversation with an ice breaker.

It would be good if you came prepared to the Social Meetup with an ice breaker.  A suggestion from literature is to share 1 very interesting thing, 2 moderately interesting things, 3 very dull things

… or more simply you could have an example of why you love the HD8 postcode area of Huddersfield, and share positive news and stories.

If, however, you fancy joining, but do not wish to participate other than listening, that is okay too.

Format

We have the option of having one big conversation, or splitting into groups. Depending on number of attendees.

We also have the option of holding a speed social (similar to speed dating or speed networking – but we are not looking for proposals for marriage or business!), just to talk to some different people.

Speed Social would allow you to have lots of mini conversations, instead of open discussion in front of everyone at the same time.

Our aim is to build a community fund which can be used to provide support to local groups and organisations in the area.
Whether it is to help groups go back to normal or provide services in the meantime.

Did you previously run a mother and baby group? We are actively seeking volunteers to tune in and help run Mother With babies session.  These are aimed at mums getting together and not the activity of the child.

You can be demonstrating or passionately talking about your business which can help promote it.

We are hatching a plan for a HD8 Network Show and Tell, where we are inviting people to provide content for our event …. If you are an entertainer, dancer or gym instructor, or a Painter, Builder or Plumber giving DIY tips, or reading poetry or stories, exhibiting a photo collection … what would you like to watch or maybe offer?

You can be promoting a business (but don’t be too salesy, as no one likes being sold too) or just passionate about what you do.

Kirklees CouncilKirklees Council knows this is an incredibly difficult time for local businesses and we’re keen to showcase those that have adapted, fundamentally changed or refocussed their business models during the Coronavirus Pandemic.  Over the next couple of months we’ll be running a marketing campaign:

  • to celebrate business success
  • promote lessons that could be transferred to other businesses/sectors of the economy
  • look towards the economic recovery from the virus

Virtual Meetups now free for Silver Members

It is an unprecedented world at the moment and because of this, we are having to be ever evolving.  We are trying to adapt so that we can continue to support the local area.  One of the ways that we have been doing this, is by transferring our business networking events to Virtual Meetups – which are now FREE for Silver members, as well as Gold members.

Our virtual Meetups give local businesses the opportunity to introduce their products and services.  However we have also found the Meetups are having a positive impact on attendees social life as well as mental health.

We had initially agreed to hold the events fortnightly – more regularly than our normal monthly events.  However, it was not as easy to set this up on Eventbrite (how we process the ticket purchasing).  So we have decided to hold these weekly.

Once a month these events will be supported by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), whereby their members can attend our virtual Meetups for free.

These Virtual Meetups will cost

  • £10 to non members,

  • £5 for Bronze members and FSB members (if it is not the ‘Supported by FSB’ Meetup),

  • Free for Silver and Gold Members.

At our Virtual Meetup on Thursday 16th April, we were able to replicate our unique Speed Networking format, as seen at our physical Meetups over the past 7 years.  All agreed that they liked the format and it had been productive for them.

Survey results showed that attendees thought these events were –

  • useful for their business, enjoyable and that they will attend further ones.

  • also beneficial to attendees social life and mental health.

Simon is Leeds-based and over the last seven years he has worked with hundreds of local businesses and has assisted many clients to help fund growth through grants, a service which he now also offers to non-clients.

Photoshoot with John Steel Photography

Earlier this month the HD8 Network organised a photoshoot with the amazing John Steel Photography, inviting members and other organisations that are involved with the HD8 Network or who ‘Work’ in the HD8 area to come along and have their picture taken.

We used John Steel Photography in 2015 when we built our website, however recently, when designing a pop-up banner for the She Means Business Instagram Workshop that we hosted in June – delivered by Social Progress – we noticed that some of the images were out of date; One business has recently retired and closed their company, another has relocated to Sheffield and others had pursued different avenues in their careers.

So we realised that we needed new images that were representative of the people who currently Work, Rest or Play in the area.

To provide continuity from the previous photoshoot and existing catalogue of images, we asked our ‘models’ to bring props that illustrated their business.  For some this was incredibly easy – for example the Roofer and the Marquee Hire Company – however the services, particularly the online services, were much harder and required much more creative, out of the box thinking, but we got there.  Can you can guess correctly what they do …?

HD8 Network Photoshoot 2019 John Steel PhotographyWe also asked our models to bring their amazing smiles and told them this was a fun shoot, with lots of energy and not your typical ‘professional’ corporate headshot.

The morning was VERY busy, with some people just being able to pop in, squeezing it into their busy working day and others staying for longer and using the time to network and build relationships with the other people that came along.  Jo Cove from ‘Made in Clayton West‘, a local community organisation, said the atmosphere was buzzing and that there was a great bunch of people.

Member and regular attendee of our monthly Meetup networking events, Paul Campbell from the Effective Group, was kind enough to let us the use their new offices at Westleigh House in Denby Dale for our studio.  This was the perfect venue and we thank them enormously.

We are very grateful to everyone involved who came along and made the day super special and more importantly for creating such fantastic images.

However, of course we give all our thanks to the very talented John Steel, who used his own unique personality and banter to get the best out of the models and produce the most amazing photos.  Thank you.

We will be using these photos in our future promotions and literature, so keep a look out for this.  We had so much fun organising and arranging the day, and have a long list of people that would have loved to have been involved but weren’t able to, that we would like to do another soon.

#SheMeansBusiness Instagram Workshop

She Means Business Instagram training workshopThe HD8 Network were very honoured last month to host the #SheMeansBusiness Instagram training workshop, delivered by the amazing Esther Orridge from Social Progress.

SheMeansBusiness June 2019Local businesses, specifically startups and those adopting social media for the first time for business use were invited to attend and be shown the powers of Instagram and how it could be used for business purposes.

Esther delivered the presentation with her bubbly personality and extensive expertise and knowledge, and all the attendees agreed that it had been a very informative and useful event.

We were certainly inspired and found ourselves with renewed enthusiasm for this promotional publishing tool, prompting several images to be shared in the following days.  We hope to build on this and adopt it as a tool to engage with and find followers, furthering our communication channels.

The key takeaway point for us was that businesses should have a business profile as opposed to an individual account – which is very easy to do.

The training workshop was held at The Venue in Storthes Hall Park – where we hold our monthly Meetup networking events – and everyone agreed that it is the perfect venue for this and many other types of events – it’s even a great place to go for a coffee, something to eat or maybe something a bit stronger with family and friends.  Storthes Hall feels like a hidden gem, as if you are in the middle of nowhere, although you are no more than 15 minutes from Huddersfield Town Centre or the M1 (depending which way you drive).

6th Anniversary Meetup

This year we are celebrating 6 years of the HD8 Network.

Conceived and brought to life in the spring-summer 2013.

One of the first things we did was create a social media community and the response was they wanted to meet up.  So we created our Meetups.

Following this we brought you the website, business shows and membership packages and what we have been consistent with is our social communities and our physical meetups.

Earlier this year Jacqui Gedman – Chief Executive of Kirklees Council – kindly offered to be our speaker at one of our Meetups.

We jumped at the chance and thought it would be ideal to do this on our 6th Anniversary of HD8 Network Meetups this year in July.

Tickets will be on sale as usual.  Whilst we intend on holding our Speed Networking sessions this will depend on the number of attendees.  We also want to acknowledge and celebrate this 6 year milestone and so will try to measure the attendee interest and act accordingly.

The HD8 Network is more than just our networking events, however ….

The HD8 Network Meetups are really wonderful and you should come along to see for yourself.

We have a laugh, but also have organised time for attendees to speak with at least half the people in the room.

But most of all, we provide a comfortable fun two hours aimed at helping your business in the HD8 area.

Building relationships with other business owners can provide a range of benefits; peer learning, creating accountability, sharpening your business acumen.  It’s not JUST about growing your business contacts – but that’s pretty great fun too.

 

HD8 Network Meetups

The HD8 Network is more than just our networking events.  (But these are really wonderful and you really should come)  

At our Meetups we have a laugh, but also have organised time for attendees to speak with at least half the people in the room in a speed networking style.

As many of the attendees come regularly, this is more of a monthly catch up than elevator pitch, but it is good practise to bring business cards or leaflets with contact details to act as a reminder for people who has met you.  Some people also bring demonstrations or other portfolios, however its about what suits you best.

We generally have a speaker, aimed at educating you on aspects of business, as well as providing heightened exposure to a member’s business, whilst not being a sales pitch.

Building relationships with other business owners brings so many benefits, including peer learning, creating accountability, sharpening your business acumen, as well as growing your business contacts.

You might be looking for services and trades for home or work life, or want to promote your organisation and sell stuff.

We have many charities who come along and can tell you how you can support the organisations that help to provide much needed services to the community and the exposure they can give you in return.

The HD8 Network Meetups has a range of B2B businesses, as well as B2C and MLM in attendance.  The majority of attendees are made up of sole traders or one-man-bands, however we also have employees, as well as business owners attending and our Meetups attract all ranges of businesses at varying times of the year. You just never know who is going to book on (or even turn up) – that’s the ‘fun’ of running and ‘planning’ events.

We have fixed Google Maps on the Event Listings, following changes Google made last year, controlling the access to the information.

But please remember to include contact details and links to directory listings to make it as easy as possible for potential attendees come to your events.

At the bottom right hand of the screen you will see a little chat box.  Chat to us when you have questions or queries.

It is us, so apologies if  we don’t always respond immediately—especially in the middle of the night or when we’re in meetings.

Sponsor a networking event

Over the years the HD8 Network has brought you a range of speakers; experts in their fields and local businesses, providing insights and overviews, inspiring and informing attendees to help them become better businesses.

In November we were honoured to have Revell Ward sponsor a lunch following our event.  We believe it was in gratitude for the event, as Jenifer has attended off and on over the years and supports our aim.

It was nice to see lots of new faces, and everyone seemed to have a jolly good time, we hope to see them again in the future.

 

We have introduced a ‘bring a guest and get a credit at your next event’ promotion, which is encouraging members to invite new faces and this is having a positive impact on the numbers of attendees and conversations had each month.

We have also introduced a Contribution Slip, for attendees to help us record the impact that we are making in the local area as a result of our events and network.

We do our best to promote our events, however we need your help too!

Be an ambassador of our Mid Morning Mid Month Meetup networking events and tell others about our events and invite them along.
