Upper Dearne Woods

The woods between Denby Dale, Birds Edge and Cumberworth.

Upper Dearne WoodsJoin us in some of the most attractive woods in the area.

We are a group of volunteers who look after the woods around the River Dearne below Upper Cumberworth. If you haven’t already discovered them, they are the woods in the valley to your left as you go up the Barnsley Road (A635) from Denby Dale towards the Sovereign, opposite the council waste site.

Most visitors agree with us that these are lovely woods including, as they do, a wide range of different environments, ancient woodland, beech wood, woodland glades, a pond and several streams.

We enjoy working in these woods, usually going down one or two mornings a month for a couple of hours on a weekend. Our working parties are usually both social and working events and we always have a picnic of cake, a hot drink and a chat. Some of us choose to come practically every time, others pop down now and again, but everyone is equally welcome.

The work we do varies- but may include keeping the paths clear of vegetation, modifying the weirs in the river, so trout can swim upstream, dredging the pond or doing works to encourage the wide range of wildlife.

We try to have both gentle and harder tasks to suit everyone.

We have done bird, insect and flower surveys so we can check how the wildlife changes over time.

We also look after Turpin Hill, a wild flower nature reserve on Barnsley Road near the council tip.

We began by concentrating on the wildlife, but are also investigating the history of the woods.

We have discovered that there was probably a previously unknown water mill on the river and are getting skilled help to excavate some of the remains.

We have also discovered that we had late stone age visitors to the site, as we have found one of their flints which dates back to the time of Stonehenge.

We have a website – https://udwcg2.wordpress.com The website tells more about what we do and gives the dates of our activities.

For working parties we normally meet at the top of Greenwood Lane (opposite to the entrance to the council tip). This is at HD8 8NN, and if we come by car we normally park on the side of Barnsley Road. You will see cars parked when you arrive.

We have meetings on the 2nd Tuesday of each month in Bird’s Edge Church Hall- Birdsedge Lane HD88XR at 7:30pm.

Come and visit the woods any time, as access is free, and please pop down and see what we do on one of the working parties, or meetings.

You will be very welcome.

Village pub gets shortlisted as Yorkshire’s favourite pub

The Dunkirk in Denby Dale, West Yorkshire is one of eighteen finalists in Welcome to Yorkshire’s search for the best pub in the county.

The first round saw thousands of votes and a whooping 800 pubs nominated but The Dunkirk beat off the competition to emerge on the shortlist.

It’s come a long way in 18 months after being at risk of potentially being turned into a housing development, to now representing all that’s great about a Yorkshire country pub.

Although the building dates back to the dooms day book, its current form has only been open since November 2016, following a massive restoration project.

It was brought by four Yorkshiremen who didn’t want to see this community asset go, but rather make it thrive and become the centre of village life.

James Hampshire is thrilled to make it onto the shortlist; ‘It’s a testament to how far we’ve come in the last 18 months and the hard work of our whole team. The great thing about this competition is the votes come from our customers and we want to thank them for their support. We’re looking forward to finding out the final result in July.’

With an extensive real ale selection from micro-breweries around the County, a Yorkshire Gin List, locally sourced produce on the food menu, it really is a pub that celebrates its Yorkshire location.

Their customers certainly think so and have voted in their droves to make sure The Dunkirk has the best possible chance of being named Yorkshire’s Favourite Pub.

The next stage of voting closes on 25th June and the winner will be announced at the Great Yorkshire Show on 10th July.

To vote go to: Yorkshire.com/pub

An Introduction To Faster Fitness Solutions

Darren Thomas Faster Fitness Solutions

Hi. My name is Darren Thomas, I am the owner and founder of Faster Fitness Solutions here in Denby Dale. I have been a personal trainer and sports injury therapist for around 12 years, running my own business in Liverpool and the Wirral. In that time I have been able to help people from all walks of life get fitter, stronger and leaner and also helping them to get over injuries so they can get back to doing whatever it is that they love pain free.

So how then did I end up in Denby Dale?

Well my wife was born and brought up in Skelmanthorpe and since the birth of our son Alfie, we decided that being closer to family was really important so Alfie and quite possibly child 2 ( not on its way yet but won’t be long if its mum has anything to do with it) can grow up around the grandparents, aunties and cousins.

I won’t lie to you… Having baby sitters on tap was a big factor in our decision making process too.

Back To The Business

Faster Fitness Solutions

During my many years in the industry, I have come to realise one thing. “People are always looking for the fastest and easiest way to lose weight and get results”. Our lives certainly aren’t getting less hectic, that is for sure and the biggest barrier for people not achieving their goals has always been time. That’s when I decided to shift the focus of the business and look to creating time efficient ways of helping people do just that.

I don’t do miracle pills, potions or ridiculous diets with hyped up claims or fake results.

What I do provide is a very cost-effective and proven strategy to help you maximise your training potential. So if you can give me 2 and a half hours per week and promise to put in a bit of hard work and dedication, I promise to give you all the resources, support and guidance you need to get amazing results from your training and diet.

I would prefer to show you…

Faster Fitness SolutionsI can talk forever about my experience and the results I have had with the programs over in Liverpool but I know that it won’t really mean a great deal to you. That’s why I would love for you to come along and give it a try for yourself.

I’m new to the area and as a result I would love to meet as many new people as I can. That’s why I am offering FREE Trial Weeks on our Men’s and Ladies’ Signature Programs right up until Christmas. These are completely free and there is no obligation to sign up to anything.

Just come and enjoy 2 free personal training sessions on me so you can experience first hand what Faster Fitness Solutions is all about.

Oh yeah! I will also give you my FREE Faster Abs Recipe Book as a gift, just to say thanks for coming along to the see me and check out the studio.

I really hope to see you soon…

Take care, Darren

A Year On…

A year after first opening its doors and a Huddersfield pub is proving a village local is still at the heart of any community.

IDunkirk Families Oct 17n early 2016 The Dunkirk in Denby Dale had closed and was falling into disrepair. Under threat of being turned into housing, four local families decided they didn’t want this community asset to go without a fight. They banded together and after months of wrangling finally brought the building in May 2016.

A massive restoration project was launched with the view to preserve the history of the pub whilst giving it a new lease of life. Saving the building was the first port of call but also creating something new and exciting was key. Walls have been taken out, a new kitchen built, a function room created and perhaps most memorably a roof terrace has been erected. All to enhance your drinking and dining experience. Added to that a new snug and luxury toilets which means it’s become the destination pub of choice.

Property developer Mark Ronan is one of the investors and his company carried out the renovation; ‘The building was in a poor state so we basically stripped it back to the bare bones and started again. This gave us the freedom to reimagine the space and create a pub people want to drink and dine in today.’

Over the last 12 months regular customers have returned and told stories of when the snug used to be known as the ‘Bull Pen’ which hosted many a game of dominos into the small hours. New visitors have come from near and far to check out how a pub with its roots firmly embedded in the history of a village, can modernise and still be successful.

‘I can’t tell you how many locals have come up to me in the pub and thanked us for saving it. It’s always been somewhere for friends and families to meet and socialise and now that can continue for years to come.’ James Hampshire, director.

Real ale is at the heart of what the pub stands for and with so many microbreweries popping up, it was important to source this locally. Landlord Martyn Scofield is renowned for his knowledge of all things hoppy and he’s selected a range with a wide appeal; ‘There are eight different beers to choose from with five of those rotating regularly. Most of our ales come from local breweries including Small World Beers and Mallinson’s Brewing Co plus we also have our own exclusively brewed beer from Here Be Monsters of Holmfirth; Dunkirk Spirit.’

Food has become popular with visitors as it focuses on local produce, cooked well. Co-owner Toby Foster is a real foodie; ‘We wanted somewhere that had a good foundation menu but also offered daily seasonal specials. Clearly good value for money is essential for any pub too!’

But what of the future? David Kernahan says this is just the beginning; ‘Initially we wanted a good local with good beer and good food that wouldn’t break the bank. So far that formula has worked for us and so we’ll continue to offer quality but at an affordable price. We’re now looking forward to a busy Christmas and a successful 2018 when we’ll welcome old and new customers alike.’

With 27 pubs closing every week it’s reassuring to know that a friendly local can survive the competitive times in which we live.

Sir Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said; “It’s fantastic to see a Yorkshire business thriving and I’m so pleased to hear The Dunkirk has a strong place both in its community and with visitors to the county. Long may their success continue.”

Pub patrons swap a pint for a putter in aid of Kirkwood Hospice

Dunkirk Charity Golf Day ChequePatrons from the Dunkirk in Denby Dale pub have raised over £1,500 to celebrate 30 years of Kirkwood Hospice.

Local couple Paula and Graham Summerscales have become regulars in The Dunkirk since it re-opened in November last year, following a complete renovation. They decided to rally their fellow drinkers for a charity golf day to help boost the coffers of the hospice.

The teams teed off (23rd July) from Huddersfield Golf Club and not only completed the 18 holes but took part in mini competitions throughout the day to raise even more money. ‘Hit the Green’ was one of the most popular events.

The golfers returned to The Dunkirk afterwards for supper, a raffle and the prize giving ceremony, with the winning team accepting their rose bowl with pride.

Graham was thrilled with how the event turned out; ‘It was a great day and although we all had fun, everybody genuinely wanted to raise money for Kirkwood Hospice because they help so many local families.’

Whilst the golfers did their bit on the course, back at the pub staff and customers weren’t resting on their laurels. Logoed t-shirts were worn and collection tubs handed round throughout the weekend, many gave generously to support the fantastic work being done by the charity in Dalton.

Dunkirk Golf Winning Team

Landlord Martyn Scofield says regulars wanted to show their support; ‘Not everyone could take part in the golf day but I was surprised by how many people came into the pub that weekend and donated. The staff were great and wore their t-shirts with pride. This is an amazing local charity and I hope the money raised will help.’

On Monday 7th August Nicola Barber, Kirkwood Hospice Community Fundraiser, visited the pub to accept the cheque; ‘It was great to be a part of The Dunkirk Golf Day. It was lovely to meet Graham, Paula and all involved in making this day a great success. I felt so overwhelmed to hear how much they had raised on the day and have continued to raise since the event through collection tins. The support of the community means so much to Kirkwood and without people like Graham, we couldn’t continue providing the best standard of care and support to our patients and their families at Kirkwood Hospice.’

A visit to Jelly Beans in Springfield Mills, Denby Dale

On Thursday I spent a lovely long lunchtime in Springfield Mills in Denby Dale.  After my daughters Swinbabes swimming lesson at Inkermann Pool in Denby Dale, I thought I’d take her to Jelly Beans as her Grandparents, who usually look after then, were on holiday.

Jelly Beans Springfield Mills Denby DaleIt is the first time we’d been since the new owners took over and we were really impressed with the changes that they had made.  It seemed so much bigger.  When I say seemed, it actually was.  There are no longer the double doors to get in and what I assume was a storage area is now an imaginative play area with wooden kitchens and other role play toys.

New Owners Jelly Beans Springfield Mills Denby Dale

The counter has been extended and there seemed to be more tables.  There is a new structure in the middle with different ways to climb and explore, although I think it is definitely too small for adults to join in, but they can be right by the little ones at all times.

The other massive change is the addition of the party room; there have been more walls removed, which again I assume must have been a storage area.  The party room is sectioned off area with low walls and a gate and there is a low table with little chairs seated around it.

The menu has had a bit of a jig, but is near enough the same, basically sandwiches, jacket potatoes and salad, with numerous cakes on the counter.  The salmon and cream cheese bagel seemed to be popular order, as I noticed a few people were served it and the kid’s picnic meals are served in mini shopping baskets.

Tracey Bongo Beats Jelly Beans

Bongo Beats jelly beans 448x252
An added bonus was that Tracey from Bongo Beats came along for a half an hour session included in the price of play; this apparently happens every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon.  It was a great introduction to what she offers, other than a birthday party, we’ve not had the chance to experience her sessions as my daughter has always been at nursery when they are on elsewhere.

Jelly Beans Springfield Mills Denby Dale

The other massive improvement the new owner of Jelly Beans has made is the small touches added to the toilets, transforming the experience.  A pile of nice soaps, hand creams and air freshener, as well as toddler toilet seat, a step and I think there was even a cushioned changing mat on the fold down one.  The extra special touch was the toys hanging from the ceiling above, to distract them when they’re having their nappies changed.

While we were in Springfield Mills we also popped in to say hello and see how Crafty Kids were getting on – what an excellent concept she’s got! Messy creative play for under 8’s!  It is perfect if you want to keep your carpets and walls safe and let someone else do the tidying up whilst not denying your children this vital learning experience.

Of course we also bought some cut off portions of the amazing wedding cakes on offer from Joanna Rose … they are so amazing they are irresistible!  We also had a brief nosey in the Denby Dale Centre’s second hand shop and I had to retrieve nosey britches from wandering into the Curtain Shop – Ashley Interiors.  I did also nip into Hand in Hand Nutrition & Fitness but she had a client with her, so I said I’d comeback another time and she gave me a leaflet detailing the Pilates, Yoga, Boot Camp, Mother and Baby fitness and Metafit classes.

Springfield Field Mills is a great amenity for the HD8 area and Denby Dale in particular; admittedly the building needs some love but the retail units contained within provide enough for you to over look the tired entrance and walkways.

There are many other units not listed above which has no reflection of their appeal, but there is only so many that you can visit with a nearly 3 year old who just wanted to go on the Postman Pat and other rides situated in the corridors.  Why not visit and see for yourself what there is for you.

We have also uploaded the photos to our Instagram and Facebook accounts come and connect with us there.
